Alonzo Gerry Cook (1839 in Maine - 1932, Olympia, WA, USA) is founder of Garden Grove, California, who is now a suburban community in Orange County.

Alonso Cook's early work included serving as a probate judge in Idaho County, working as a lawyer for the state of Washington, and also practicing as a doctor. While in Vancouver, Washington, the Cook family lived briefly in the historic Charles Brown House, built in 1866, probably by Alonzo himself. The unique French Empire type architecture of this house suggests Alonzo may have built it because this type of construction usually comes from where Alonzo originated, the east coast. The architecture of the Second French Empire is rare on the west coast.

Garden Grove was established

In 1874, Cooks purchased 160 acres (0.65Ã, km ² ) of used land from the formerly dominant Able Stearns Ranch. The land covered what is now Lampson Street area to Garden Grove Boulevard and from Euclid/Main Street to Nutwood Street. There were only a few hundred people living on the farm around the area at the time.

After their home was completed in 1874, Cook began the establishment of a civilian center, the beginning of trade, and a school district for the area. Cook donated all the necessary land for this facility, which is the first resemblance of the village he named "Garden Grove". Locals do not like this name because it consists of open land.

In 1877, the village had churches, blacksmiths, post offices and general stores. In 1881, the Cook family moved to pursue interests in other countries and other companies. Early life

Cook, Gerry's son and Mary Cook, met his bride Belle Webster in 1860 when she attended Ohio State University and she taught in Iowa. They married in 1861 when he was 22 years old and he was 18 years old. The cooks had one daughter, whom they named Marabell.

After their marriage, Cook continued his education. He studied at Ohio State University and Union Law School, now Northwestern University. Throughout their marriage, Cook and his wife moved several times, living in Iowa, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and California.
