Arter & amp; Hadden LLP is a Cleveland-based law firm that tracks its founding until 1843 and ceased operations on July 15, 2003. When the company closed, it was one of the oldest operating law firms still in existence in the country. The company has been engaged in an ambitious expansion throughout the 1990s, culminating in 1999 with a total of 425 lawyers employed by the company. In addition, Arter and Hadden have opened offices in Columbus, Ohio, Dayton, Ohio, Washington, DC, Dallas, Texas, Los Angeles, California, Irvine, California and through acquisitions and mergers opened offices in San Francisco and San Diego, California.

Financial woes

In 2000, the company began to lose its senior partner. On Arter & amp; DC Hadden's Office, for example, the number of staff attorneys continued to decline from 87 in 1998 to just 15 lawyers in 2003. And with a sharp decline in staff, Arter and Hadden were still locked in office space leases sufficient to accommodate 425 corporate attorneys in 1999. Overhead costs began to absorb the company's liquidity, and in early July 2003 it was revealed to the press that Arter and Hadden had only enough capital left to continue operations until July 15, 2003.

Closure

In statement to all employees of Arter & amp; Hadden just weeks before his death, the company announced all work would be suspended on July 15, 2003 and the company would stop all operations. Senior partners and corporate executive committees sought to find ways to keep the company afloat but all the ideas ultimately failed.

Settlement of bankruptcy

After the company closed its doors in July 2003, the company appointed Marc Gertz as its trustee. Gertz conducted an independent investigation into the company's closure. Gertz discovered in the last years of Arter and Hadden, partners have acted inappropriately by conspiring together to form new legal partnerships while still employed by Arter & amp; Hadden, and decided to give themselves a year-end bonus (despite knowing the uncertain financial circumstances of the company). The estate company reached a settlement with more than 80 former Arter and Hadden partners, who agreed to pay the property nearly $ 11 million. Firma firms also reached settlements with many creditors Arter and Hadden - including JP Morgan, Huntington Bank, and Compass Bank.

Successor law firm

Many of the former Arter & amp; Partner Hadden went on to form their own law firm after Arter & amp; Hadden closure. The Cleveland-based Tucker Ellis LLP was formed by many former partners at the Arter and Hadden offices in Cleveland. Also, Columbus-based Bailey Cavalieri LLC was formed by former Arter & amp; Partner Hadden.
