John Marsh Tyson (born July 14, 1953) is a lawyer and an American government official, currently serving as the Judge of the Court of Appeal of North Carolina. He also served in court from 2001 to 2009.

Before serving in the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Judge Tyson worked at Tyson & amp; Associates, where he practiced landlord-tenants, land use, and real property law, civil litigation and criminal defense. Judge Tyson is a Board Certified Specialist by the North Carolina State Council for Legal Specializations for real estate, business, commercial, and industry transaction laws, the only North Carolina certified judge.

Judge Tyson over thirty years of professional experience includes private law practice, the development and position of a senior-level real estate advisory firm, and more than twenty-five years as a Legal Professor and author.

Tyson is a member of North Carolina and Virginia State Bars and a certified mediator and arbitrator. He is a former member of the North Carolina Property Tax Commission and former chair of the Cumberland County and Land Cumberland Planning and Water Conservation Planning Board. Judge Tyson is a frequent CLE presenter and writer, and holds the AV-Pre-eminent peer reviewed rating from Martindale Hubbell.

Judge Tyson graduated from Terry Sanford High School, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1971. After graduating from high school, Tyson attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, in Wilmington, North Carolina, and earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA ) with emphasis in English and Secondary Education, as a member of the Dean's Register, in 1974.

He followed Adrian Wiggins's Law School, Norman School, at Buies Creek, North Carolina, and earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1979, a law school premier.

In addition, Judge Tyson has received many degrees and professional accreditations. He studied at Notre Dame Law School - through the London School of Economic & amp; Political Science, in London, England, during their Summer Program, in 1977. In 1988, he attended the Duke University Fuqua School of Business, in Durham, North Carolina, and obtained his Master of Business Administration (MBA). In 2001, he attended New York University Law School, in New York, for a Judge of Appeals Seminar, during Summer 2001. In May 2004, he attended the University of Virginia Law School, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and obtained his Master of Laws in Judicial Process, (LL.M.).

In 2000, Tyson was elected to the North Carolina Appeals Court. His tenure began in January 2001. He was defeated for re-election for a second term in 2008. He continues to serve as a judge of withdrawal at the Court of Appeals, and as a North Carolina High Court judge of emergency, and a Professor of Legal Assistant at the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law (Campbell University). Tyson was elected to the Court of Appeals again in November 2014 for terms beginning in January 2015.

Tyson practiced law in Fayetteville from 1993 to 1996 and from 1996 until his election to the Court, with a short tenure as Senior Vice President of Development for Blockbuster Entertainment Group at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1996.

He worked as Director and Real Estate Adviser for Revco Drug Stores, Inc., from 1982 to 1993 and in the same capacity for Family Dollar Stores, Inc., from 1980 to 1982.

He served as North Carolina Experiment/Liberation Officer Officer for the North Carolina Department of Correction, from 1975 to 1976. He also became a public school teacher and deputy sheriff in Cumberland County.

Board and Commission

Tyson was recently appointed to the North Carolina State Ethics Commission by North Carolina House of Representatives for a three-year term starting in 2013. He was appointed to the North Carolina Judiciary Conference Committee on Compensation and Benefits by the North Carolina Justice Chief (2002-2008). He was appointed to the North Carolina Property Tax Commission by the Chairman of the Council of North Carolina Representatives, where he served from 1997 to 1999. He was appointed to the Legislative Research Committee on Private Property by President Pro Tempore of the North Carolina Senate held office in 1995. He is a member from the Legislative Research Committee on the Impact of Costs, Exceptions and Dedications by the President of Pro-tem of the Senate in 1994. He was elected to Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation Area, where he served as Vice Chairman & amp; then Chairman of the Board, and served from 1992 to 1996. He was appointed to the Cumberland Planning and Zoning Council, where he was elected Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Board, and served from 1993 to 2001.

Military services

He was assigned as Captain, promoted to Major, Lieutenant Colonel and served as Colonel and Judge Staff Advocate for North Carolina State Defense Force, under the command of North Carolina Adjutant from 1987 to 1996, and is currently in reserve inactive. He served as Colonel and Judge Staff Advocate for the United States Service Command in the Third Division, (a voluntary non-profit disaster relief organization), from 1999 to 2004.
