Rafael Barba is a fictional character depicted by RaÃÆ'ºl Esparza, who joins the long-running NBC crime drama series Law & amp; Order: Special Victims Unit repeatedly during the 14th season episode of "Twenty-Five Acts". Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba moved from the Brooklyn District Attorney's office to Manhattan after asking what he called a "lateral movement." Barba was taken to work with the Special Victim Unit at the behest of the SVU captain, Steven Harris (Adam Baldwin), for after Delia Wilson's case. He is an aggressive, often cruel prosecutor who puts pressure not only on detectives, but also victims and witnesses, to achieve results. He read a lot, and likes to refer authors like Tom Wolfe and Kurt Vonnegut.
During his time as the Special Unit for the Victims of the ADA, he became a close friend of Lieutenant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), and they served as believers during difficult cases. He relied on her especially when his adopted son Noah was kidnapped. He emotionally calls him "Rafa".

In his first case with the Special Victim Unit, he demanded a rape similar to the best-selling erotic novel, Twenty-Five Stories by Jocelyn Paley (Anna Chlumsky), who was the victim of rape. Barba told detectives to reveal anything and everything about Paley and his attackers. After rushing to put Paley in the pulpit to testify, Barba and the detectives discover that Paley did not write the book, which forced Barba to be creative with the trial. Barba mocked the defendant with a belt tied around his neck, causing him to hit and strangle Barba from behind in the same way as he did to the victim. After this, the jury found the defendant guilty.
Barba is in direct contact with Suffolk County District Attorney Pam James (Jane Kaczmarek), in the episode "Beautiful Frame", after a rape victim in Manhattan is accused of killing her ex-boyfriend in Suffolk County. Detective Benson questioned the allegations against women and gathered enough evidence for Barba to put another man on trial for the same murders, as Barba and James raced to gain conviction before others. Barba and the SVU detective found a scandal in the Suffolk County DA office, as one of James's investigators who arranged the young woman for the murder. Barba offered to free James's more embarrassing offices as investigators were convicted of murder in Suffolk County.
In the episode, "Valentine Funny", Barba and the detective have a hard time convincing pop star Micha Green (Tiffany Robinson) to testify against her rough girlfriend, hip-hop artist Caleb Bryant (Eugene Jones). After the shooting that killed his manager with Bryant as a suspect, Barba and Benson convinced Green to testify at the grand jury. But when he finally takes a stand, he tells Barba that his girlfriend is not at the scene and instead says Barba and Benson put the words to her mouth. After Bryant escaped prosecution, the couple escaped on vacation, in which Bryant eventually defeated Green to death.
Towards the end of the fourteenth season, Barba became close to the squad, and they relied on her legal advice on many of the assigned cases. In the episode "Undercover Blue", Benson goes to Barba in an effort to provide evidence that could potentially remove Detective Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters) from rape. Barba already has evidence and, although she does not prosecute the case, keeps a close eye on the trial. At the end of the season, "Negotiations", Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) calls Barba to the police station over the weekend for a B-class crime because she believes that the offender, William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber), is more dangerous than accusations. It turns out Lewis is a rapist and serial killer, and Barba makes a failed attempt to punish him. In episode 15 of "Psycho/Therapist", Barba tries Lewis once more, this time for some of Benson's rape/murder and kidnapping. The case became complicated when Lewis chose to represent himself to torture Benson further. Barba was able to punish Lewis for most of the charges, but did not try to rape Benson.
In the 15th episode of the season "October Surprise", SVU pursues a childhood friend Barba Alex MuÃÆ'Â ± oz (Vincent Laresca), a pioneer for the mayor of New York City, for indecent exposure and child pornography. Although Barba was initially reluctant to assist in the investigation, she became more focused on doing the right thing when it became clear that MuÃÆ' Â ± oz was guilty. Barba gave MuÃÆ'Â ± oz an opportunity to "go ahead" by reminding her of the harshness of the accusations, which irritated the detectives, especially Detective Nick Amaro (Danny Pino). Barba was eventually forced to file a lawsuit against MuÃÆ'Â ± oz, despite warnings and repeated threats from MuÃÆ'Â ± oz, her manager, and Munoz's wife, who happens to have a relationship with Barba. A number of details about Barba's early life were also revealed in "December's Solstice"; mentioned there that he grew up in the Bronx and lectured at Harvard University on a scholarship.
The series also gives some details about the Barba family. He had a difficult relationship with his father; He said that old Barba "has died 15 years, and my hands are still kinky when I think about it". It is later revealed that his father died after a diabetic coma. Regardless of how he disliked his father, Barba could not bring herself to release her from the support of life, and therefore he let the disease happen. She and her mother, Lucia (Mercedes Ruehl), took care of Barbina Catalina's grandmother (Anne Betancourt). When Catalina can no longer take care of herself, Barba tries to move her to the retirement community against her wishes, rather than letting Lucia leave her job as the charter principal to take care of her. When Catalina died of a heart attack just before moving, Barba blamed herself.
In the seventeenth season, Barba unrelieved in carrying offenders behind bars and in "Life of Intersecting", Barba goes after Riker's prison officer, Gary Munson (Brad Garrett), who raped female prisoners. Because Barba filed charges against him, the whole prison system turned against him, feeling that Barba's office rushed to accuse their fellow practitioners based on a prisoner's lies. Barba was horribly threatened in the courthouse elevator and on the stairs outside after the press conference. In the following episode, "Passages Heartfelt", Barba reveals she has received threats even before Munson's case; Detective Dominick Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino) and Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) went on to help Barba identify them and provide security details to her.
In the 18th episode of "Know It All," Barba suddenly resigns from the investigation of the rape/murder of suspect David Willard (Chris Diamantopoulos), for whom Benson has requested a search warrant, and did not say the reason for his choice. Benson gets a warrant from another ADA, and Willard's office search will result in a disposable cell phone. One of the calls received was from a young girl, who proved to have a connection to Barba; his mother, a heroin addict, had been a witness in one of his cases several years earlier. She had paid her mother to secure her testimony, knowing that she would use the money to buy drugs, and she later died of an overdose. Barba starts sending money to her daughter every month, and realizes that Willard has to hack into her bank account to use this information against her. The episode ends with Barba unsure about her future at DA office; in the next episode, "The Newsroom," he returns to the courtroom, telling Benson that he has just finished his suspension.
Barba left the DA office in the middle of the nineteenth season, in the episode "The Undiscovered Country." His regrets for having left his father on life support in a diabetic coma led him to decide the life support system for a comatose whose parent feels about whether to do it. DA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) insists on suing him for murder. Although he was released, Barba decided that it was time to move on, after 21 years as a prosecutor.

RaÃÆ'ºl Esparza is approached by Legal & amp; Order: Special Victim's Unit Executive Producer Warren Leight appears in series as Assistant District Attorney. Leight previously worked with Esparza in the production of Broadway 2012 Leap of Faith and Leight insisted on writing a character for Esparza that would complement his acting power, "because he wants to keep working together". He initially had an objection to accepting that role, because he did not believe that it would satisfy the work on stage and the acting requires different skills. However, Esparza believes that role will give him a "recovery" time from the leap of Faith of Broadway production, which is "messy". He signed up for the role, because "it was the best time to get away from the place where my heart was destroyed".
Before being cast as Barba on SVU , Esparza appeared in the 2009 episode Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent , where it describes ADA that has a dirty secret, and episode 2010 Law & amp; Messages , in which he describes a tabloid journalist.
On July 12, 2013, it was announced that Esparza will join the main player as Barba, in the fifteenth season of the series. On the promotion, Leight said, "Making him [Esparza] regular series is a small way to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to our show". Barba is the first regular ADA on the series since Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie March) in the eleventh season, and first man.
In the thirteen episode of season 19, Esparza leaves the players. He chose to leave the role, saying "I've done six seasons, I feel like it's time to leave." I've been exploring a lot of what I thought about Barba I just felt it was time to move on.
Reception
The New Yorker television critic Emily Nussbaum praised the portrayal of Esparza characters, stating that, "[Esparza] is the main asset as the mighty A.D.A. Rafael Barba". According to the New York AM newsletter, Esparza is "the most familiar to TV viewers as Manhattan District Assistant Attorney Rafael Barba on 'Law & Order: SVU.'"
According to Esparza, Barba "flashy, high clothing... and sharp suspenders" is very popular online, with Kate Stanhope from TV Guide adding that the character "clothing designers has become a hit with fans".

Esparza has been credited in 115 episodes of SVU (appearing in 85) as Barba, making it the 2nd longest ADA in Law & amp; Message franchise history after Jack McCoy.
