Robert Allen Wherry Jr. (born April 7, 1944 Langley Field, Virginia) is a former US tax court judge.
Wherry earned a B.S. from the University of Colorado and J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School, followed by LL.M. in Taxation from New York University Law School. He is a colleague and former bupati of the American College of Tax Counsel and former chair of the Taxation Section of the Colorado Bar Association. He has served as chair of the Small Business Tax Committee of the Colorado Trade and Industry Association, as president of the Denver Tax Advisory Association, is a former chair of the Administrative Practices Committee of the American Bar Association of Tax Branches, a member. Council, and a member of the Advisory Panel of the Bar Bar of America in the Settlement of Disputes. He is registered with The Best Lawyers in America (in tax litigation). His articles have appeared in ALI-ABA publications, The Colorado Lawyer, Tax Records, and State Tax Records. He is a former Colorado correspondent for State Tax Records and has spoken at various tax institutions, including the University of Denver Tax Institute and Tulane University Tax Institute and the American Bar Association Tax Section programs. He is an instructor in Tax Court litigation for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.
Wherry was appointed by President George W. Bush as Judge, US Tax Court, on April 23, 2003, for the term of office ending April 22, 2018. He retired from the Tax Court bench effective January 1, 2018.
