Stacey Yvonne Abrams (born December 9, 1973) is an American politician, lawyer, novelist, and female businessman who is the home minority leader of the Georgia General Assembly and the state representative for the 89th Home District. He is a Democrat. Abrams is a Democratic nominee in Georgia's 2018 governor election, the first major female governor nomination in the United States.

Early life and education
Abrams, one of six siblings, was born to Robert and Carolyn Abrams in Madison, Wisconsin and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi. The family moved to Atlanta where his parents pursued graduate school and later became Methodist ministers. He attended Avondale High School, elected to the Telluride Association's Summer Program, and was the first African-American farewell school speech. While in high school, he was hired as a typist for congressional campaign and later hired as a speech writer at the age of 17 based on the edits he made while typing.
In 1995, Abrams took it B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Political Science, Economics and Sociology) from Spelman College, Magna cum laude. While at college, Abrams worked in the youth service department at May Mayor Jackson Maynard's office. He then apprenticed in the Environmental Protection Agency. As Harry S. Truman Scholar, he studied public policy at the University of Texas at the LBJ Public Affairs School Austin and obtained his Master of Public Affairs in 1998. In 1999, he obtained his PhD from Yale Law School.

His first major action as a Minority Leader was his collaboration with Governor Nathan Deal's government to reform the HOPE Scholarship Program. Abrams sponsored a 2011 law that maintains the HOPE program by reducing the amount of scholarships paid to Georgia students and funding a 1% low interest loan program for students.

Abrams ran for governor of Georgia in Georgia 2018 election governor. In the Democratic primary he ran against Stacey Evans, another member of the Georgia House of Representatives. The media has called this a "Staceys fight." Abrams, who runs a progressive platform that focuses on children's issues and economic justice, will be the first African-American women's governor in the US if elected. On 22 May 2018, Abrams won the Democratic nomination for governor, making him the first black woman to be the party's primary nomination for governor.
Business law and careers
Abrams works as a tax lawyer at Sutherland Asbill & amp; Brennan's law firm in Atlanta, focusing on tax-exempt organizations, health care and public finance. He was named Deputy City Attorney for Atlanta at the age of 29.
Abrams co-founded and served as senior vice president of NOW Corp. (formerly NOW NETWORK Network Corporation), a financial services company. He founded Nourish, Inc., a beverage company focusing on infants and toddlers, and CEO of Sage Works, a legal consulting firm, which represents clients including the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA.
Writing career
Abrams has published articles on public policy issues, taxation, and nonprofit organizations. Under the pen name of Selena Montgomery, Abrams is the award-winning author of several romantic tension novels. According to Abrams, he has sold more than 100,000 copies of his novel. Selena Montgomery is the winner of the Reviewer Choice Award and the Reader's Favorite Award from Romance In Color for Best New Writers, and is featured as a New Star. Abrams is also the author of Minority Leader: How to Lead from the outside and Make Real Changes published by Henry Holt & Co. in April 2018.

In 2012, Abrams received the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award from the Kennedy Library and Harvard University Institute of Politics, which honors an elected official under 40 whose work shows the impact of elective public service as a way to overcome public opposition. In 2014, he was named Public Official of the Year by Governing Magazine , an award that recognizes state and local officials for outstanding achievements. He received the Georgia Legislative Services Award from the Georgia County Association's Commissioner, Democratic Legislator of the Year from the Young Democrats of Georgia and the Wild Red Democrats, and the Environmental Leaders Award from Georgia Conservation Voters. Abrams won the Grand Champion to show 1000 lb. heifer Bessie at the Legislative Ranch Show 2012 at Georgia National Fair.
Abrams is a lifelong member of the Council on Foreign Relations, New Generation Associates of the American Assembly, Member of the American Marshall Memorial, Salzburg Seminar - Member of Freeman US-East Asia Relations, and Member of Yukos for US-Russian Relations.
Abrams received the Stevens Award for Extraordinary Legal Contribution and Elmer Staats Award for Public Service, both national awards presented by the Harry S. Truman Foundation. He is also a 1994 Harry S. Truman Scholar.
In 2001, Abrams was named one of the "30 Future Leaders" by Ebony Magazine. In 2004, he was named with Georgia Trend's "40 Below 40" list, and an Atlanta Business Chronicle named Abrams on the Top 50 List Below 40. In 2006, he was named Georgia Rising Star by Atlanta Magazine and Law & Political Magazine.

Abrams currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the Atlanta Metropolitan University Foundation, the Gateway Center for Homelessness and the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, and the Advisory Council for Literacy Action and Health Student Taking Action (HSTAT). He also worked on the Visitor Board for Agnes Scott College and the University of Georgia, as well as on the Advisory Board for Let America Vote (a voting organization founded by former Missouri Foreign Minister Jason Kander).
Personal life
Abrams is one of six children born to Reverend Carolyn and Reverend Robert Abrams from Mississippi. His sister, Leslie Abrams, is a federal judge in the Central District of Georgia. In April 2018, Abrams wrote an opinion for Fortune that he owes $ 50,000 in taxes and keeps $ 170,000 in credit cards and student loan payables.
