History
The association is now known as Voyles Zahn Paul Hogan & amp; Merriman was founded in 1920 by Frank Symmes, making him one of the oldest law firms in the city.
The company was founded as Symmes, Fleming, and Symmes, and has evolved over the years with changes in membership. It was formerly known as Symmes, Fleming, Ober, and Symmes; Ober, Symmes, Cardwell, Voyles, and Zahn; and Symmes, Voyles, Zahn, Paul, and Hogan.
The company's founder, Frank Symmes, is one of the authors of the Indiana Criminal Law, which is widely regarded as one of the most important treatises on the subject. He counted among his clients, boxing legend Jack Dempsey.
Company lawyers Frank and Charles Symmes represent Connie Nicholas, who is accused of killing Forrest Teal, then president of Eli Lilly International. This case received national media attention and was featured in LIFE magazine.
After his representative from Nicholas, Charles Symmes participated in the criminal defense of those indicted in the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum explosion in 1963. He is one of the authors of the third edition of Indiana Criminal Code with his father, Frank.
The tradition of corporate legal services has been continued by the current membership. Dennis Zahn and James Voyles represent Dr. David Little in the 1991 trials for murder. The company has a rich leadership history outside the courtroom. Arthur Robinson was a United States Senator from 1925 to 1935. George Ober is the President of the Indiana Lawyers Association and a founding member of the United States Car Club. J. J. Paul, III, served as Dean of the National College for Defense DUI in 2004, and James H. Voyles, Jr., was President of the 2009 Association of Bar Indianapolis. Charles Symmes is a member of the Board of Governors of Butler University, and Voyles and Sharon Merriman are members of the Board of Trustees of Illinois and Antioch College today.
