Charles " Chuck " Stuart (December 18, 1959 - January 4, 1990) is an American suspect in the Boston 1989 area murder that produced national news headlines. Stuart mistakenly suspected that his unborn wife and child were shot and killed by an African-American attacker. Stuart's brother confessed to the police that Stuart himself killed them to collect life insurance, and Stuart then committed suicide.

Murder

In 1989, Stuart served as general manager for Edward F. Kakas & amp; Boys, feathers on Newbury Street. Stuart's wife, Carol (nÃÆ' Â © e DiMaiti, born March 26, 1959, in Boston), is a tax lawyer, and is pregnant with the couple's first child. On October 23, the couple drove through the Roxbury neighborhood after attending the birthing classes at Brigham and Women's Hospital. According to Stuart's next statement, a dark-armed black man with a hoarse voice forced his way into their car at a traffic light, ordered them to go to nearby Mission Hill, rob them, then shoot Charles in the stomach and Carol in the head. Stuart then leaves, though he's hurt, and calls 911 on his car phone.

On a crime night, the CBS reality television series Rescue 911 was riding with Boston Medical Emergency Services personnel. The crew took dramatic footage of the couple released from the car: Carol can be seen "in profile, her pregnancy stands out, pushed into the ambulance." Other recordings include Charles Stuart trying to talk with ambulance workers, and graphic scenes from his rush to the hospital emergency room.

Carol Stuart died just hours after the shooting, around 3:00 pm on 24 October. The funeral took place four days later at St. James in Medford. Shortly before his death, the doctor delivered the baby by caesarean section, two months earlier. Baptized in an intensive care unit, the boy was named Christopher, in the likes of Charles and Carol before. Christopher suffered trauma and lack of oxygen during the shootings, and died seventeen days later. A private funeral service was held for Christopher on November 20, 1989.

Investigation

Boston police are looking for a suspect based on Stuart's description of the assailant. The Washington Post describes the situation: "The urban anger seems endless, probably because it's impossible not to feel stained by Stuart's case, whether someone is deceived by a racist lie or something impotent because the police focus their investigation on the succession of people innocent blacks. "Meanwhile, Stuart himself was hospitalized for six weeks; the severity of his injuries required two operations, and Stuart's surgeon did not suspect that the near-fatal wound was caused by self. The police found a young man, Willie Bennett, who matched Stuart's description. On December 28, Stuart identified Bennett as his attacker in line.

The case against Bennett suddenly collapsed on January 3, 1990, when Charles Stuart's brother, Matthew, identified Charles as Carol's murderer. Matthew admitted that he had ridden to meet Stuart that night to help him do as he was told to become an insurance fraud. Upon arrival, Matthew said that he had seen that Carol had been shot, and that his brother had shot himself to make it look like a car hijacking. Matthew took a pistol and a bag of valuables, including the couple's wedding ring, and tossed it off the Pinus River Bridge in Revere. Some items, including pistols, were later rediscovered.

Because Stuart had blamed the incident on an African-American man, and the information provided by his brother made the police conclude that it was not true, the racial tension increased in Boston for a while.

Possible motives

Police later learned that Stuart was angry at the prospect of becoming a father, especially worried that his wife would not return to work and their financial status would be reduced. Stuart also started a relationship with Deborah Allen, an employee at Kakas & amp; Boy, though Allen denies romantic engagement. The Boston Globe reported that a $ 480,000 check was issued to Charles Stuart in payment for a life insurance policy to his wife, but no checks were ever found. The Cold Blood Television program reported and confirmed that Charles received a $ 100,000 life insurance check that he cashed in just after being discharged from the hospital. Stuart also bought a new Nissan Maxima for $ 16,000 in cash.

Suicide

On January 4, 1990, hours after his brother Matthew revealed the truth to the police, Charles met with his lawyer. Shortly after, Stuart's car was found abandoned at Tobin's Bridge in Chelsea. A note was found in Stuart's car, stating that he was "beaten" by "new allegations" and "attenuated his powers." Stuart's body was found on the Mystic River the following day. Researchers later discovered that Stuart had previously expressed a desire to kill his wife.

In 1991, Matthew Stuart was indicted for obstruction of justice and insurance fraud for his role in covering up crime. A colleague of Matthew, John McMahon, was also charged as an accessory for murder. Stuart pleaded guilty in 1992 and was sentenced to three to five years in prison. He was released on parole in 1997, but was later recaptured for the cocaine trade. On September 3, 2011, Matthew Stuart was found dead from a clear drug overdose at Heading Home, a homeless shelter in Cambridge.

In the memory of Carol Stuart, her family founded the Carol DiMaiti Stuart Foundation to provide scholarships to residents of Mission Hill. In early 2006, the foundation awarded $ 1.2 million to 220 students. DiMaitis's lawyer Marvin Geller explained to the press: "Carol does not want to be remembered as a sensational victim of murder, but as a woman who leaves a legacy of healing and compassion."
