A state trunk association is a lawyer association that represents or seeks to represent a lawyer who practices law in a particular US state. Their functions differ from state to state, but often include state inspection administration, Continuing Legal Education regulations and other requirements, and lawyer discipline for ethical or other offenses. The state bar usually provides services to members such as maintaining lawyer directories in the state, facilitating social events for lawyers, publishing bar journals and providing classes to meet this CLE credit requirement.

The mandatory and voluntary bar
A mandatory or integrated bar association is one that states delegate authority to organize acceptance of lawyers to practice in the country; usually this requires membership in a bar association to practice in that country. Bars shall have their powers from the legislative law and/or from the power of the state court system to regulate previous practice.
In other states, membership in a bar association is voluntary. In some states, organizations must exist primarily for the purpose of organizing acceptance for practice, while voluntary organizations exist for other purposes. For example, in Virginia, the Virginia State Bar is a compulsory organization and the Virginia Bar Association is voluntary.
There are many lawyers' associations apart from state bar associations. Usually this is governed by geography (eg local bar associations), practice areas, or affiliates (eg ethnic bar associations).

Continuing Legal Education Requirements
The rules of most state bar associations require members to complete the requirements of Advanced Legal Education ("CLE"), and also offer courses for lawyers in their area, with discounts for certain bar association members. Many organizations offer CLE programs, including most or all of the state bar associations. Uniquely, the Kentucky Bar Association offers a two-day program known as Kentucky Law Update, conducted in at least seven locations across the state, allowing its members to meet their annual CLE requirements without registration fees.
