Ferrell was born in Irvine, California, to Betty Kay (nÃÆ' à © e Overman, born 1940), a teacher who teaches at the Elementary Schools of Old Mill School and Santa Ana College, and Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. (born 1941), a musician with devout Brethren. His parents were both natives of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and moved to California in 1964. Ferrell's ancestors included Britain, Germany and Ireland. He has a younger brother named Patrick. When he was eight years old, his parents divorced. Ferrell says about divorce: "I'm the kind of kid who will say, 'Hey, look on the bright side! We'll have two Christmas'." Divorce is friendly and both parents are committed to their children. The biggest problem is his father's job. As a person in the show business, his salary is never stable and he goes away from home for months at a time. Growing up in this neighborhood made Ferrell not want to go into the show business, but got a steady job.
First go to Culverdale Elementary and then attend the Rancho San Joaquin Secondary School, both in Irvine, CA. He studied at University College in Irvine, and became a kicker for the university football team. He is also on the football team and basketball team captain, and serves on the student council. Ferrell calls third grade "a very important year". She realizes she can make her classmates laugh if she pretends to bump her head against the wall, or if she stumbles and falls accidentally, and says it's a great way to get friends. He said Irvine's folly contributed to his humorous growth:
Growing up on the outskirts of the city, in a safe place, Irvine's planned by masters, no drama so we had to make it in our heads. My main form of entertainment is to hack my friends and explore new ways to be funny. I do not have to have a survival mode instinct like any other comic, growing up in a difficult environment. I have the opposite. For me, I grew up in Mayberry, and humor solved the boredom. And there are many things to make fun of.
In his final year of high school, Ferrell and a friend will be performing a comedy show over a school intercom system, with the cooperation of the principal; both must write their own material. Ferrell also performed a comedy skit on a school talent show. He won the superlative "Best Personality" chosen by his classmates. He enrolled at the University of Southern California, where he studied sports broadcasts and joined Delta Delta Delta Fraternity. In college, he is known for some jokes. Sometimes, he would wear a janitor's clothes and walk to his classmates. He is also known for dashing around the campus with several others from the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Ferrell got an apprentice at a local television station in the sports department, but he did not enjoy the job.
After graduation with B.A. degree in sports information in 1990, he knew he did not want to broadcast. He took a job as a hotel valet where, on the second day, he tore the luggage rack from the top of the van by trying to drive it under a low beam. He also works as a teller at Wells Fargo, but gets $ 300 on the first day and $ 280 a second; he does not steal money, but just careless and error-prone. In 1991, encouraged by his mother to pursue something he liked, Ferrell moved to Los Angeles. He successfully auditioned for The Groundlings comedy group, where he spent time developing his improvisation skills.
