Ace Attorney is a series of novel visual adventure video games developed by Capcom. The first entry in the series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney , was released in 2001; since then, the next five major game series, as well as various high definition spin-offs and remasterers for newer game consoles, have been released. In addition, the series has seen adaptations in the form of live action films and anime, and has become the basis for manga series, drama CDs, musical and stage plays.
Players take on the roles of various defense lawyers, including Phoenix Wright, his mentor Mia Fey, and his subordinates Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes, and investigate cases and defend their clients in court; they discover the truth by cross-examining witnesses and finding inconsistencies between the testimony and the evidence they have collected. The cases are all last up to a maximum of three days, with the judge determining the results based on the evidence presented by defense lawyers and prosecutors. In the Ace Attorney Investigations spin-off series, players take on the role of prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, and in the spin-off of Dai Gyakuten Saiban they play as Phoenix's ancestor, Ry? nosuke Naruhod ?.
The series is made by writer and director Shu Takumi. He wants this series to end after the third game, but continues, with Takeshi Yamazaki taking over as writer and director starting with Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (2009); Takumi has since returned to write and direct some spinoff titles. Although the original Japanese version of the game is made in Japan, the localization of this series is set in the United States, while retaining Japanese cultural influences. The series has been well received, with reviewers liking characters and stories, and the discovery of contradictions; it has also performed well commercially, with Capcom taking it as one of their strongest intellectual properties.

General elements
Gameplay
The Ace Attorney game is a visual novel adventure game in which players control defense lawyers and defend their clients in several different episodes. Gameplay is divided into two types of parts: investigation and trial trial space. During the investigation, players search the environment, gather information and evidence, and talk to characters like their clients, witnesses, and police. After enough evidence has been collected, the game moves to the courtroom trial section.
In trial courtrooms, players aim to get their clients declared "innocent". To do so, they cross-examine witnesses, and aim to find lies and inconsistencies in testimony. They can go back and forth between different statements in testimony, and can suppress witnesses for more details about a statement. When players find inconsistencies, they can present evidence contrary to the statement. Players are punished if they present false evidence: in the first game, a number of exclamation points are displayed, with one disappearing after every mistake the player makes; in the next game, a health bar representing the patience of the judge was used instead. If all the exclamation points are missing, or the health bar reaches zero, the player loses the game and their client is found guilty.
Some of Ace Attorney's games introduce new game mechanics into the series. Justice for All introduces "psyche-locks", which is displayed above the witness when players ask about topics they do not want to discuss; using magatama , players can start breaking the psychic key by showing witness evidence or a character profile proving that they are hiding something. The number of soul keys depends on how deep the secret is; when all keys are broken, topics become available, giving players access to new information. Apollo Justice introduced a "perceive" system, in which players searched for moves or actions made by witnesses that showed jitters, similar to tell in poker.
Dual Destinies introduces a "mood matrix", in which players can measure the emotions of a witness, such as a tone of anger when mentioning a particular topic; if players pay attention to contradictory emotional responses during testimony, they can point out differences and depress witnesses for more information. Dual Destinies also introduces "revisualization", in which players review important facts and form relationships between evidence to reach new conclusions. Spirit of Justice introduces the "sà © ances" prediction, in which players are shown the memories of the victims shortly before their death, and must find contradictions in the five victims to determine what has happened. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney introduces simultaneous cross-examination of multiple witnesses, with players able to see and hear the reactions of different witnesses for testimony and use this to find contradictions. Dai Gyakuten Saiban introduced "common sense", in which players discovered the truth by showing when their investigative partner Sherlock Holmes took the reason "further than the truth".
The Ace Prosecutors Investigation spin-off series divides the gameplay into the investigation phase and phase of the rebuttal, the latter being similar to the trial court assembly of the main series. During the investigation phase, players look for evidence and talk to witnesses and suspects. The things that note the player's character in the environment are kept as mind; players can use a "logic" system to connect the two thoughts to gain access to new information. At some point, players can make hologram reproductions from the scene, where they can find new information that would otherwise be hidden. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 introduces "chess logic", in which players interrogate witnesses in time sequences visualized as chess games, with players aimed at destroying chess pieces of other characters. To do this, they need to build their advantage in the discussion by alternating between speaking and listening, and then choosing to carry out an attack.
Character and settings
The protagonists of the first three games were defense lawyer Phoenix Wright, assisted by the Maya Fey spirit medium; in the third game, the Phoenix Mia Fey mentor is also a playable character. In the fourth game, the protagonist is a defense lawyer for Apollo Justice; in the fifth, Phoenix, Apollo, and new defense attorney, Athena Cykes are all protagonists; and in the sixth, Phoenix and Apollo are the main protagonists. The spin-off of Dai Gyakuten Saiban was set in England at the end of the 19th century, and following the ancestors of Phoenix Ry? Nosuke Naruhod ?.
Phoenix's childhood friend Miles Edgeworth, who is the protagonist of the Ace Attorney Investigations game, is a repetitive rival prosecutor character; In addition to him, every new game in the series introduces new rivals: Franziska von Karma introduced in the second game, Godot in third, Klavier Gavin fourth, Simon Blackquill fifth, and Nahyuta Sahdmadhi sixth. Most of the prosecutor's characters are portrayed as a strong and arrogant character of a high social status, which supports his conviction over finding the truth, and who cares about keeping a perfect record of triumph in court. Similar to actual Japanese prosecutors, prosecutors in the series often directly supervise investigations, issuing orders to the police. Japan's attitude toward the police is reflected in the series, with police represented by incompetent characters like Dick Gumshoe, Maggey Byrde and Mike Meekins. In the world of Ace Attorney, trials last only three days, and usually end up with a "guilty verdict". The outcome of the case was decided by the judge, based on evidence provided by defense lawyers and prosecutors.
Development
The series was created by Shu Takumi, who wrote and directed the first three games. The first game was conceived in 2000 when Takumi's boss at the time, Shinji Mikami, gave him six months to create whatever type of game he wanted; Takumi initially joins Capcom who wants to create a mystery and adventure game, and feels that this is a great opportunity for him to make his mark as a creator. The game is designed to be simple, because Takumi wants it pretty easy even for her mother to play. Initially this would be a detective game, with Phoenix becoming a private detective, but at one point Takumi realized that finding and taking separate contradictions was not related to detective work, and felt that the main setting of the game had to be courtroom.
Takumi feels that the best way to write a mystery with a good climax is to reveal the clues, and then draw them together into one conclusion, and not have many final possibilities. He says that the biggest challenge with it is to make games and stories work together; the goal is to make players feel like they have pushed the story forward on their own, with their own choice, even if the game is linear. He spent little time writing backstory for Phoenix before writing the first game story, and instead of making dialogue and developing the Phoenix personality as he left. She came up with a Mayan partner character because she thought it would be more fun for players to have another character with them, give them advice, rather than investigate themselves.
After the first game development is over, Mikami tells Takumi that they must make the Ace Attorney trilogy, with the grand finale in the last case of the third game. Initially Takumi planned to let Edgeworth become the attorney in all the episodes in the second game, but during the production development team learned that the character had become popular. This causes Takumi's feelings that she should use the character more carefully and sparingly; he creates new prosecution character Franziska von Karma, to save Edgeworth for the final case of the game, and avoid the situation in which he - a supposedly magical man - loses every case. Since Takumi wanted the first three Ace Attorney games to be part of a larger job, he avoided making many changes between games: the art of the first game for main characters like Phoenix, Maya and Edgeworth was reused , to avoid previous games look obsolete compared to newer games in the series; and no new game mechanics are added for Exam and Misery , because Takumi is happy with the gameplay after adding psycho-key mechanics to Justice for All .
For the fourth game, Takumi writes scenarios and takes on a supervisory role. He wants the series to end in the third game, when he feels Phoenix has been fully explored and that his story has been told; he said it was important to know when to end a story, that he did not want the series to be a shadow of his previous self, and that he saw no reason to continue it. Nevertheless, the Ace Attorney Investigations spin-off series was created, directed by Takeshi Yamazaki and produced by Motohide Eshiro; Takumi returns to the series to write a crossover Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney . He also directed and wrote Dai Gyakuten Saiban , described as the first entry in the new Ace Attorney series . He says that he has mixed feelings about the series developed by other Capcom staff, comparing it to the parents who sent their child to their first day at school. Yamazaki and Eshiro continue to direct and produce the main series entries Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice . Exhausted after working on Dual Destinies, Yamazaki shares responsibility with Takuro Fuse for Spirit of Justice, with Yamazaki working on scenarios, and Fuse on art and gameplay.
Localization
The localization of the first game was submitted to Bowne Global, and handled by writer Alexander O. Smith and editor Steve Anderson. While the Japanese version takes place in Japan, the local version is set in the United States: because one episode involves a time zone, they must determine where the game is going, and choose the United States without much thought. The original Japanese judicial system remains intact in the localization, as that change will change the whole structure of the game.
Changes in series settings' becomes a problem in later games, where the Japanese setting is clearer. Starting with the second game, the localization direction of the series has been handled by Janet Hsu; One of the first decisions he must make is how to localize the Mayan birth town and Fey clan mysticism. He came up with the idea that a localized version of the Ace Attorney game occurred in Los Angeles in an alternative universe where anti-Japanese legislation such as the California Alien Land Law of 1913 was not ratified, anti- Japanese sentiment was not strong , and where Japanese culture flourished. It dictates what should be localized and what Japan should keep; things related to the Fey clan and channeling techniques Kurain saved Japan, as it was the Mayan heritage, while Japanese food that was not widely known in the West changed, as was changing Maya's favorite food from ramen to burger. Certain changes were mocked by the players as the dish became more popular in the West, and the lampshade in the English version of Spirit of Justice, where Maya was portrayed as a ramen and burger.
Character names are also localized to use double meanings similar to Japanese names; the name of the word is based on the personality of the character or the background, or the visual joke. Some English names are based on their Japanese counterparts, but for some characters the names have to be changed heavily compared to the Japanese version. Smith and Anderson have a lot of freedom when localizing the names of small characters in the first game, but discussing the names of major players with Capcom. The English name of the English Phoenix, "Wright", was chosen as his Japanese name, "Naruhod?" - meaning "I see" or "I understand" - often used as a joke in the script.
Dual Destinies is given a digital release only in the West. This is partly due to a rigorous game development schedule: with the release digitally, Capcom was able to release an English version close to the Japanese release date. Although Ace Attorney Investigations 2 has not been officially licensed, it has received full fan translation.
Reception
The Ace Attorney series has been well received by critics, and has performed well commercially: in December 2009, it was Capcom's 9th best selling series of all time, and in October 2010, they called it as one of them "The strongest intellectual property", with more than 3.9 million units sold worldwide. Until December 2013, this series has sold more than 5 million units. In the United States, the first game became very successful, forcing Capcom to prepare at least three additional to meet demand.
Reviewers have been fond of finding contradictions; Common complaints, however, are the games' linearity, as well as how players sometimes have to use trial-and-error methods because the game only accepts pieces of specific evidence, and how testimony statements sometimes need to be pressed in a specific order. Some reviewers criticized the lack of changes to the games and presentations throughout the series, while some say that the series fans will have no issues with this.
Geoff Thew at Hardcore Gamer says that the "madness" of the game world makes his case entertaining, but also "resonates at a deeper level" because of its relationship with the real Japanese legal system, making the arrangements still feel relevant in 2014 Bob Mackey at USGamer says that the Ace Attorney game is one of the best written games of all time, and the power of this series is how every game builds up to a "stunning and satisfying ending". Thomas Whitehead at Nintendo Life also liked the writing, praising the balance between "light nonsense" and the darker and more serious scenario. Some reviewers appreciate series characters; They say that the mockings of Phoenix and Maya are among the best in the video game, and that the Edgeworth character bows are one of the most interesting parts of the stories.
Some reviewers praised the music series. They say that the biggest aspect of the series is audio design, with the first three games using the Game Boy Advance sound chip better than any other game for that platform; he called the music phenomenal, with the exception being in Justice for All, but said the sound effect is what "stole the show". Mackey commented that the game 'a small amount of animation for each character is used well for their characterization.
