Life and career
His father, Murray Cutler, was a New York City detective who later became a criminal defense attorney. When interviewed on Allan Wolper's radio conversation program at WBGO 88.3 FM, Cutler said he was inspired by his pro-worker father, pro-union loyalty to the FDR-style Social Democratic position.
Cutler became famous in the 1980s when he won three exemptions for Gambino Crime Family boss John Gotti (including one in which at least one jury accepted a bribe in return for choosing to find Gotti innocent).
When Gotti was indicted in 1990 for Paul Castellano's murder in 1985 and several other crimes, the presiding judge I. Leo Glasser disqualified Cutler and his two associates from Gotti. Citing evidence of wiretapping at Rottite's Gotti's club, the prosecutor stated that Cutler and his colleagues may have known about criminal activity. Because the attorney-client privilege does not apply in such situations, the prosecutor argues that Cutler is "part of the evidence" and thus can be called as a witness. They also argue that Cutler has represented other potential witnesses and thus has a conflict of interest. Glasser sided with the prosecutor, arguing that Cutler was an "internal advisor" to the Gambino family.
Cutler appeared in the films Robert De Niro and Ed Burns, 15 Minutes , playing alone. He also appeared on Court TV, with lawyer Ed Hayes, discussing criminal cases and current events at Cutler and Hayes, and on the CW network owning his own TV show, Jury Duty . She also made two guest appearances in the episode "Drawing Dead" and "Open Secrets" from the 4th season of the Blue Bloods CBS show. She is the godfather of Hayes's daughter, Avery.
Cutler had been a major defense attorney for Phil Spector until August 27, 2007, when he announced that he would be leaving the Spector defense because of "the difference of opinion between Mr. Spector and me about strategy."
Between October 2014 and February 2017, Bruce Cutler's law office maintains the Connection of Counsel with The Law Firm of Dmitriy Shakhnevich.
