John Larkin McKay (born June 19, 1956) is a former US Attorney for the Western District of Washington.

McKay, a member of a leading Republican family in the state, attended the Seattle Preparatory School and the University of Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1978. After working as an assistant to Congressman Joel Pritchard (R-WA) in 1978-1979, McKay earned a law degree at the Creighton University Law School in Omaha, Nebraska in 1982.

He was accepted to Washington State Bar and joined Seattle Lane Powell Spears Lubersky law firm in 1982, eventually becoming a litigation partner with the company. He then merged with Cairncross & amp; Hempelmann in Seattle, leads the litigation group and serves as a member of his management committee.

He was accepted to practice in front of the United States District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal, and the United States Supreme Court.

Career as a Lawyer and U.S. dismissal

McKay was one of eight US lawyers dismissed by the Bush administration in 2006 which, after the fact, was publicly described as for performance-related issues related to "policy, priority, and management."

Appointment as U.S. Prosecutor.

McKay was appointed US Attorney by President George W. Bush in October 2001. He had received a positive evaluation seven months before he was dismissed. Among his noteworthy achievements, the prosecution of a successful terrorist, Ahmed Ressam. Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey gave McKay the additional responsibility for overseeing a pilot program for computer systems (called Law Enforcement Information) for his success, earning him the highest civilian honor of the United States Navy.

The Seattle Times noted in February 2007, "One of the most persistent rumors among Seattle law is that the Justice Department forced McKay, a Republican, to resign to placate Washington State Republicans angry over The governor's race 2004. Some believe McKay's dismissal is retaliation for his failure to hold a federal grand jury to investigate alleged voter fraud in the race. "

On March 17, 2007, the Seattle Times reported, "Former Republican Republican Rick White, one of three Republican candidates has filed to replace John McKay as a US lawyer for Western Washington, unable to practice law in the country section License White was suspended by the state Supreme Court in August 2003 for failing to pay his bar fee. Toobin noted that Gonzales assured the Welsh family that the investigation was still the top. priority of the Department of Justice.

Post US. Lawyer's career

On May 21, 2007, Getty Images announced that McKay will join the company as senior vice president and general counsel, based in their headquarters in Seattle.

On September 17, 2007, Jonathan Klein, CEO of Getty Images, announced that McKay will resign as general counselor to return to law school at Seattle University where he will teach full time. McKay is currently a full-time law professor at Seattle University School of Law.

During his career as a US Attorney, McKay was the prosecutor of Canadian cannabis activist Marc Emery for the distribution of Canadian cannabis seeds. Since then, McKay has called for marijuana law reform so that its sales are legally and taxed.
