Michael G. Millman (July 9, 1939 - May 31, 2014) is an American criminal defense lawyer, founder of the California Appellate Project, and an anti-death penalty activist.

Family and education

Michael Millman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and he grew up in Summit, N.J. Millman is the only child of Sidney, a physicist, and Dorothy, a teacher. Millman graduated from Harvard University in 1960 with a degree in physics and earned a master's degree in physics from UC Berkeley. Driven by social justice activism in the 1960s, Millman decided to study law - instead of science - and graduated from Yale Law School in 1969. During the civil rights movement he handled, and deeply inspired by, Alabama Attorney Fred Gray, who represents Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and other movement leaders.

Millman married Cynthia Taylor Millman. She has three children. Laura Dillard, David Millman, and Matthew Millman. She has three stepchildren from her marriage to Cynthia; and 13 grandchildren.

Legal career

After law school, Millman worked for Alameda County public defenders for about six years. He later joined the Office of Public Defenders and became the coordinator of the death penalty after state lawmakers returned the death penalty in 1977.

In 1983, The State Bar of California created The California Appellate Project as a legal resource center to exercise its constitutional right to counsel for poor people facing capital punishment in California. Around the time of his establishment, Millman became director of the CAP. Millman served as CAP director for 30 years. In his role in the CAP, he oversees efforts to assist private lawyers representing more than 700 people in California's death row. He has a close and direct relationship with the California Supreme Court for over 25 years in his role as Executive Director of CAP.

Millman is also active in California Lawyer for Criminal Justice, serving as President of the Board of Governors in 1984. He also serves on the Supreme Court committee established to improve the timely handling of capital cases appeals and the habeas corpus petition. In 2013, Millman was awarded the CACJ's Significant Contribution to the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Criminal Court.

Michael Millman is a founding member of Death Penalty Focus, committed to eliminating capital punishment through public education, grassroots organization and political advocacy, media coverage, and the establishment of a domestic and international coalition. Millman is also affiliated with the Death Penalty Information Center - working with Anthony Amsterdam and other execution litigation leaders - and serving as President of his council. In April 2014, Death Penalty Focus awarded Millman the Lifetime Achievement Award for "its unwavering commitment to providing high quality representation to the poorest people in death". He sometimes teaches in local law schools, such as Stanford Law School and others.

Death and reward

On May 31, 2014, Mr. Millman died of pancreatic cancer. California Supreme Court Chief Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye said of Millman: "Michael Millman is the pillar of the capital's defense bar, a hero for many, and a real man he will be sorely missed, and we are very saddened by this great loss." Lance Lindsey, CAP's administrative director, said: "Michael is a very good and noble person who dedicates his whole life to advancing social justice and, in particular, to 'be the change we want to see in the world' by every day the act of mercy and generosity. "American Bar Association President James Silkenat rewarded Millman:" As someone who is also very concerned about justice, I am grateful for all you have done to make the world a better place.You are the type of lawyer and man. we all aspire. "
