The Lawyers Association of National Justice Defenders ( NACDL ) is an American criminal defense organization.
Its members include private criminal defense lawyers, public defenders, active US military defense advisers, law professors, judges and defenders in international criminal tribunals, including the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
NACDL, headquartered in Washington, D.C., founded in 1958, has nearly 9,000 direct members and 90 state, local, and international criminal law enforcement organizations with a total of about 40,000 members.
Organizations have worked to build coalitions of legal organizations to provide a forum for important legal issues. Groups like the American Bar Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Constitution Project, the Federalist Society, the Heritage Foundation, and the Washington Legal Foundation have been involved with these projects.
NACDL will occasionally send reports to support applicants where the results will affect membership of the organization.
The Champion magazine is an official journal of NACDL and offers informative articles written for and by criminal defense lawyers, featuring the latest developments in search and foreclosure laws, DUI/DWI, grand jury processes, habeas corpus , exclusion rules, capital punishment, Influential Rape and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), federal punishment guidelines, foreclosures, white-collar crime, and more.
In 2012, NACDL launched the Criminal Docket podcast. Guided by Ivan J. Dominguez, he presented a number of criminal news and interviews with "leaders in legal practice, public policy, journalism, academia, and others whose lives intersect with the criminal justice system."
NACDL regularly publishes news on topics of interest to its membership and the public. Topics include relevant legislation and regulations, report releases, adopted resolutions, and case activities of the US Supreme Court.
The Association also writes reports and white papers on the critical issues facing the American criminal justice system. Some examples include Additional Damages: American Failure to Forgive or Lost in Crime War - Road Map to Restore Rights and Status After Arrest and Conviction (2014) and Summary Injustice: Constitutional Views Disadvantages in Court Summary South Carolina (2016).
