The Tax March (also known as Tax Day March and Trump's Tax Day ) is a series of demonstrations held in over 150 locations across the United States on April 15, 2017. His intention was to pressure US President Donald Trump to release his tax.

At least 180 parade events are held in the United States and abroad. The protests were a response to the lack of transparency in the Trump administration, and the fact that President Trump has still not released his tax returns on that date, contrary to his promise that he will do so. April 15 is the deadline for most households to file income tax returns in the United States, although by 2017 the deadline is April 18 when the 15th falls on a Saturday.

The parade organizers demanded that President Trump issue IRS taxes, as promised during the campaign. Tax Day protests have been held since the 1990s and earlier, although until then usually by libertarian groups. The Tea Party movement began with the protest of the Tax Day on April 15, 2009.

After 300,000 Americans signed an online petition at WhiteHouse.gov in January 2017, Trump spokesman Kellyanne Conway announced Trump would not release its tax due to lack of interest. In response, the March Tax Day is planned for April 15, 2017, to be held in more than two dozen major US cities, to press Trump to release its taxes.

The idea for the parade was originally proposed on Twitter on January 22, 2017 by law professor Jennifer Taub, followed shortly after by comedian Frank Lesser. Some of the Tax Day parade events are planned independently, without any awareness of tweets by Taub or Lesser.

Unlike most liberal protests in the United States, the Tax March does not focus on broad issues, but focuses on specific requests.

Organizers and participating groups

Taub, who proposed the idea of march on Twitter, then joined the executive committee for the parade. Lesser also helps to plan and publicize the event.

Groups gathered for the parade included the American Teachers Federation, Color Changes, Spring Democracy, Media Matters for America, MoveOn.org, National Education Association, National Women's Law Center, and Citizens.

In early April 2017, the parade organizers wrote to members of the Republican Congress who had asked Trump to release his taxes, asking them to attend the parade and "hold the President accountable".

Planning

Marches are planned, and take place in more than 150 cities across the United States. Marches in at least eighteen US cities feature giant inflatable chickens, originally designed by graphic artists in Seattle and produced in Zhejiang, China for Lunar New Year (for Year of Chicken). The organizers of the San Francisco Tax March who ordered the first inflatables felt that they symbolized that "Donald Trump is a big cock for not giving up his taxes." Organizers using Facebook's Day Tax page chose to focus the event on "government transparency, conflicts of interest and an unfair tax system," according to CNBC.

Aftermath

Official reactions

When asked to comment on the march by The Washington Post on April 13, the White House referred to a statement made earlier this week by press secretary Sean Spicer, stating that the President is under IRS audit but has transparency with finances. On Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, Trump tweeted twice about Tax March. First he tweeted, "I do what is almost impossible to do for the Republic - easily win Electoral College! Now Tax Refund brought up again?" and then, "Somebody has to find out who paid for the little rally held yesterday.

Reactions

Scarlett Bustos, deputy chairman of Tax March Sacramento, said: "When the administration says that he will not give up his taxes, he says people do not care, and we're here to show that nationally people do care." The protesters also appealed to their representatives to urge Trump to relieve his taxes.

David Myers, a professor at the University of California, Irvine said that the march was "a kind of Donald Trump troll, and then he almost always responded poorly and said something stupid." Jason Silverstein of the New York Daily News commented, "Apparently unable to decide whether the election talks should end or should proceed, Trump is also attacked by the latest flareup on his tax return, which even this year's tax filing season fails to reveal. Nick Merrell tweeted his response to Trump's reaction, "Congratulations, you've just confirmed to everyone who marched yesterday that it's worth their time." Taub also feels that the parades caused Trump to notice, because he was tweeting about them the next day.

Counter-protest

Some Trump supporters plan a counter-protest. The Pro-Trump Rally is scheduled for April 15th in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Berkeley, California. The Berkeley demonstration, which was not formally linked to the March Tax, turned violent, with pro-and anti-Trump fighting groups, and more than a dozen arrests. No arrests were made at the Colorado Springs rally.
