Life and career

Rufus L. Edmisten was born and raised in Boone, North Carolina. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science with honors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and J.D. from the George Washington University Law Center in Washington, D.C., where he served in Law Review. During law school, he joined North Carolina Senator Capitol Hill Sam Ervin's staff, where he served as Adviser to the Senator Subcommittee on Ervite Judiciary on Constitutional Rights and as Chief Advisor and Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Separation of Power. In 1973-1974, Edmisten was the Deputy Chief Advisor to the Senate Watergate Committee, chaired by Ervin. With Terry Lenzner, an assistant advisor on the Senate Watergate Committee, Edmisten serves a court call to the White House for a Watergate tape. This is the first time in history that the Congressional Committee serves a subpoena on the sitting President. During his time working for Senator Ervin, Edmisten participated in important legislative initiatives, such as securing constitutional rights to American Indians and providing constitutional protection for military personnel. After Senator Ervin's retirement in 1974, Edmisten returned to North Carolina. He was elected state prosecutor in 1974 and served on the post for ten years. While the attorney general, Edmisten was involved in a successful effort to prevent the beautiful New River Dam. He launched various legislative efforts, such as securing victim rights, upgrading the country's historic preservation law, and setting new education standards for state law enforcement personnel. Edmisten was a Democratic nominee for the Governor in 1984, losing to Republican James G. Martin, a loss attributed to Martin's support by Edmisten's main opponents in the Democrats.

After his failed governor's campaign, Edmisten conducted the law with Reagan H. Weaver for four years. In the 1988 and 1992 elections, Edmisten won the office of the Secretary of State. As Secretary of State he expanded the supervision of securities in an effort to protect investors, and worked with the General Assembly to make laws to establish the Corporations Liability Limited in North Carolina.

In 1996, Edmisten resigned from his post after an audit of the State Secretary's office led to the investigation of the State Bureau of Inquiry into several alleged abuses of office. The investigation, which involved more than 100 interviews and culminated in a 3000-page report, freed Edmisten and his staff from all charges. Edmisten argues that his resignation has nothing to do with the investigation. Following his resignation in 1996, Edmisten launched a legal practice that joined former NC Department of Justice colleagues and US Deputy attorney Woody Webb in 1998.

Edmisten has filled key roles in several private organizations outside of his legal practice. He runs a charity in North Carolina called the Foundation for Good Business: Extra Special Super Kids. The Super Kids program provides college scholarships for underprivileged secondary students who wish to pursue higher education. Rufus has served on N.C. Capitol Foundation for more than 25 years, including six years of duty (2000-2006) as the President of the foundation. He is a member of the board of directors of the Julia Crump Foundation and Project Enlightenment, both are charitable organizations that seek to increase educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth. Rufus also serves as a board member for the Raleigh area at Union Bank. Thirty years ago, Rufus, the famous Jim Valvano, and Don Shea founded the Children's Classics Golf Tour of Jim Valvano, who has raised several million dollars to seek medicine for children suffering from cancer at Duke University Hospital.

Rufus and his wife, Linda, live on the National Register of 1921 and the Historic House of Raleigh.

He is a panelist at NC Spin, North Carolina's longest political talk show, and he is often a guest at Weekend Gardener, a 40-year-old popular garden show on Radio WPTF. Edmisten is an avid gardener. Jasper, a six-year-old British Setter, is Rufus's best friend and protector of a 2 1/2 acre home.
