Legal career
Budd is president and manages Baron & amp; Budd, P.C., one of the largest plaintiffs law firms in the country, headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
A Baron & amp; Budd since 1985 and president and managing shareholders since 2002, Budd expanded his company from asbestos asbestos practices to a national corporation tackling the biggest defendants in diverse areas such as mesothelioma (cancer caused by asbestos exposure), water contamination, qui tam, California Proposition 65 offenses, pharmaceutical and medical-device injuries, Chinese drywall, financial fraud and online fraud.
From the mid-1980s to the 1990s, Budd represented a group of Costa Rican farmers in a lawsuit stating that the pesticides used in the banana plants they were using had caused a sterility epidemic between their ranks; Budd strives to allow plaintiffs to sue in US courts, where companies producing pesticides are located. Budd attempted to try cases in Florida, Texas, and California, eventually winning a Texas Supreme Court ruling in 1990 that allowed the case to be brought to the country.
In the late 1990s, when a subsidiary of Halliburton filed for a bankruptcy reorganization, the company's asbestos casualties secured the Baron & amp; Budd to protect his rights. The agreement reached after Russell Budd, the company's managing shareholder, negotiated with Halliburton created the largest asbestos trust fund of its kind anywhere in the world that will protect current and future asbestos victims across the United States. In 2010, under the direction of Budd, the company represents individuals and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill .
Philanthropic and political activities
Budd, along with his wife Dorothy, who is also a lawyer, as well as a deacon at the Incarnation Church in Dallas, has been involved in various philanthropic activities. From 2004 to 2014, they donated $ 3.5 million to non-profit organizations in the Dallas area and donated an additional $ 2.5 million in 2014 to Southern Methodist University, to bless the Budd Center for Involving Communities in Education at the SMU School of Education and Development Human. Under the direction of Budd, Baron & amp; Budd donated $ 3 million to the International Pleural Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital to examine curative therapy for mesothelioma. Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, Lung Cancer Alliance and other asbestos awareness advocacy organizations also benefit from generous donations from companies. The company has undergone two books for mesothelioma patients: one written and produced by Cure magazine and one by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
Budd has also been a prolific donor for the Democratic Party and served as a "bundler" in Obama's presidential campaign, raising at least $ 50,000 for the presidential campaign by requesting money from other donors. Budd and his wife, Dorothy, hosted the president at their home in August 2010, where Vice President Joe Biden also came to raise money in March 2010. Budds contributed $ 50,000 apiece for Obama's inauguration in January 2009.
