American Airlines Flight 320 , enrollment of N6101A, was Lockheed L-188A Electra en route from Chicago Midway International Airport to New York City's LaGuardia Airport on February 3, 1959. The plane crashed into the East River as it approached; 65 of 73 passengers were killed. It was the first accident for Electra, which was recently introduced by American Airlines. It will not be the last, however, as a series of fatal accidents over the next year will cause the aircraft to lose confidence by the flying public, including two mysterious failures in flight resulting in speed and short range restrictions. grounding by the FAA.

The Civil Aeronautics Board (NTSB's predecessor) is a government agency charged with investigating aircraft accidents, during that time. CAB PROBABLE CAUSE statement:

The board determines the possible cause of this accident is a premature descendant below the minimum landing which results from crewmembers' crew on certain aspects of the aircraft and its environment against the omission of essential flight instruments for attitudes and altitudes on the surface of the approach.
Contributing factors.
1. Flight experience with aircraft type;
2. Wrong approach technique where autopilot is used in heading mode to or near to surface;
3. Incorrect settings of captain altimeter;
4. Marginal weather in the approach area;
5. Possible misinterpretation of altimeter and descendant indicator rates; and
6. Sensory illusions with respect to the height and attitudes resulting from visual references to some of the lights in the approach area.

Many references to 320 Flight claim that there are 72 people in it and that there are only seven survivors. This mistake may be because one victim is a baby pangku and has no seat or ticket of his own.

Robert Emerson was one of the victims of the accident. Emerson was a prominent botanist, who discovered that plants have two different photosynthetic reaction centers.

Herbert Greenwald was one of the victims of the accident. Greenwald is a Chicago real estate developer who develops several landmark buildings using Mies Van Der Rohe as its architect.

Flight numbers are still in use today on the Montego Bay-Miami-Dallas/Fort Worth route.

The accident occurred on the same day that a plane carrying Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all three singers. (See "The Day the Music Died.")
