Michael Thornton Burns (born December 30, 1947) is a professor of American history at Mount Holyoke College, as well as a published author and former child and television actor.

Michael Thornton Burns was born in Mineola, New York on Long Island, a suburb of New York to the director and producer Frank Xavier Burns (best known for the early television series Martin Soe Private Eye and Mary Lou DeWeese. She has an older sister, Pamela.

In 1949, the family moved to Yonkers, New York. In 1956, the family moved to Beverly Hills, California, where she attended Beverly Hills High School. He studied for a year at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia before he moved to UCLA, whom he attended mostly after work hours while still working as an actor for a few days and living in Redondo Beach.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa summa cum laude in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He later obtained a Master of Arts degree in European history at the same institution. In 1977, he entered Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, from where he received his Ph.D. in modern European history.

Burns was invented by Lee Wallace, head of the cast for 20th Century Fox, who set up Burns's debut in the 1960 episode, "A Taste of Lobster" from ; Burns plays a cunning 13-year-old businessman, Chrissie Tyler, who has a nanny agency. He soon acted as a regular player on Wagon Train as "Barnaby West" (season 4-8). He later starred in the 19-episode NBC comedy film This is the Human World (season 1962-63) as 14-year-old Howie Macauley.

Burns appear with James Stewart Sir. Hobbs Carrying Vacation , a 1962 movie. In 1966, he joined Audie Murphy in the western movie, 40 Guns to Apache Pass . He appeared as a guest star in over thirty-five series during the 1960s and 1970s, mostly Westerners, including Gunsmoke The Virginian , The Road West , The Legend of Jesse James and The Big Valley . In his twenties, he appeared in several films, including Journey to Shiloh (1968), The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell (1968), Cold Day in the Park (1969), Thumb Tripping (1972) and Santee (1973 ). She appeared as "Blue Boy" in "The LSD Story", the pilot episode of the re-launched Jack Webb series Dragnet 1967 .

Historian

In 1980, Burns became professor of history at Mount Holyoke. In 1991, he wrote, Dreyfus A Family Affair, 1789-1945 , a study of Dreyfus affairs in France during the 1890s. A reviewer of Burns's book writing in The New York Times called the work "a solid book written about the man and his family, a book that emphasizes the elemental human drama of the captain's story." After retiring in 2002, Burns was honored by Mount Holyoke with professor emeritus designation.

Next life

While at the faculty at Mount Holyoke College, Burns married former university president, Elizabeth Topham Kennan in June 1986. He has a son, Frank Alexander Kennan, from a previous marriage. Since 2002, the couple lived in Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky, where they have restored Cambus-Kenneth Estate, a ranch, cattle and horse race listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

He is a member of the Thoroughbred Club of America, owner and breeders, and the Kentucky Breeders Association.

A Democrat, Burns is a donor to then US Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election and Daniel Mongiardo, a party candidate for the US Senate from Kentucky that same year. Kerry and Mongiardo lost to Republican George W. Bush and Jim Bunning, respectively.
