Mobile phone surveillance , also known as spy phone , may involve tracking, tapping, monitoring, interception and recording of conversations and text messages on mobile. It also includes monitoring of the movement of people, which can be tracked using a cell phone signal when the phone is turned on. In the United States, law enforcement agencies can monitor the movement of people legally from their mobile signals after obtaining a court order to do so. Mobile surveillance software is software that is secretly installed on the phone that can activate this action.

Mobile phone tracking

StingRay devices are used by law enforcement agencies to track the movements of people, and intercept and record conversations, names, phone numbers, and text messages from mobile phones. Their use requires monitoring and data collection of all phones within the target area. Northern California law enforcement agencies that have purchased StingRay devices include the Oakland Police Department, the San Francisco Police Department, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department, the San Jose Police Department, and the Fremont Police Department. The use of Fremont Police Department from StingRay devices is in partnership with the Oakland Police Department and the Regional Attorney Office of Alameda County.

In 2007, StingRay's devices assisted the Oakland Police Department in Oakland, California in making 21 arrests, and in 2008, 19 arrests were made simultaneously with the use of StingRay devices.

StingRay devices are often used in combination with Hailstorm towers which are jamming mobile phone signals forcing the phone to drop down from 4G and 3G band networks to older, safer 2G bands.

In many states, police can get many types of mobile data without getting a warrant. Law enforcement records indicate that police may use preliminary data from tower dumps to request another court order for more information, including addresses, billing records and call logs, texts and locations.

Bugging

Phone bugs can be created by disabling the ringing feature of the phone, allowing callers to call the phone to access the microphone and listen to it. Accidentally hiding a cell phone in a location is a tapping technique. Some hidden phone bugs rely on Wifi hotspots, rather than cellular data, where the rootkit tracking software periodically "wakes up" and enters the public wifi hotspot to upload tracker data to a public internet server. In the United States, the FBI has used "roving bugs", which require microphone activation on the phone to allow monitoring of conversations.

Phone surveillance software

Mobile surveillance software is a type of phone tapping, tracking, and monitoring software that is secretly installed on the phone. The software can enable conversations to be heard and recorded from installed phones. Mobile surveillance software can be downloaded to mobile. Mobile surveillance software enables monitoring or snooping of target phones from remote locations with the following techniques:

  • Allows remote observation of target phone positions in real-time on maps
  • Turn on the microphone remotely to capture and forward the conversation. The microphone can be activated during a call or when the phone is on standby to record a conversation near the phone.
  • Receive long distance notifications and/or text messages every time someone calls a number on a phone
  • Remotely read text messages and call logs

Mobile surveillance software can enable the microphone on the phone when the phone is not in use, and can be installed by the mobile service provider.

Detect

Some indications of possible mobile surveillance that may occur may include mobile phones that unexpectedly awaken, use a lot of CPUs when not in use or when not in use, hear clicks or sounds when a conversation occurs and the phone's circuit board warms even when the phone is not in use.

Prevention

Preventive measures against cell phone supervision include not losing or allowing foreigners to use cell phones and use of access passwords. Turning off and then removing the battery from the phone when not in use is another technique. Faraday jamming or cage can also work, the last to remove the battery. Another solution is a phone with a physical switch (electric), or an isolated electronic switch that disconnects a microphone, a camera without a bypass, which means the switch is user-operated - no software can reconnect.
