Claude Alexander Allen Jr. (born October 11, 1960) is an American lawyer appointed to be Assistant President of the United States for Domestic Policy by George W. Bush.

Allen grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University School of Law. He began his legal career in 1990 as a scribe for federal judges, then became a partner with Baker Botts from 1991 to 1995 and Virginia Attorney General's office from 1995 to 1998. From 1998 to 2001, Allen served as Secretary of Health. and Human Services for the State of Virginia, and later became Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States under the administration of George W. Bush.

Allen was appointed as Assistant to the President in January 2005. Allen then resigned on February 9, 2006, stating he wanted to spend more time with his family. Careers

Allen grew up in a Democratic household, but he took a post-college job as a press secretary to Bill Cobey, a Republican Congressional candidate in North Carolina. Legal career

From 1990 to 1991, Allen was a legal officer for David B. Sentelle, a judge in the US Court of Appeals for Circuit D.C, best known for his role in the Whitewater investigation. Allen met and became Clarence Thomas's protege, who was the judge in court at the time Allen was wandering there.

In 2001, Allen was appointed Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2004, Allen was nominated by President George W. Bush to become a federal judge in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. His candidacy was opposed by many educational, religious, and racial groups, including the People for the American Way, the NAACP, and the National Organization for Women (). The American Bar Association judges it as partly "not qualified". His candidacy stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee and ended on December 8, 2005.

Allen was captured by Germantown Target store for the loss prevention of manager Pete Schomburg on January 2, 2006. Personal life

Allen, a long-time evangelical Christian, married Jannese Mitchell Allen, and is the father of four children; including Claude Allen III, Lila-Cjoan Allen and Christian Isaiah Allen. The Allens is an active member of Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg.

His son Claude Allen III pleaded guilty to murder on September 3, 2014 but was declared irresponsible and legally committed to psychiatric institutions.
