CITY OF RIVERSIDE: PUBLIC UTILITIES: DEWEY, CHEATEM AND HOWE??? A ...

Dewey, Cheatem & amp; Howe is the name of a fictitious legal joke or accounting firm, used in some parody arrangements. The name of the joke mocks the tendency of some lawyers and accountants to take advantage of their clients: The name of the company is a pun on the phrase "Are we cheating them? And how!" The name of the gag is also used more widely as a placeholder for hypothetical law firms.

The second name is somewhat different in spelling (Cheetem, Cheater, Cheethem, Cheatham, etc.), but also the underlying word (Screwum, Burnham, etc.).

Example

Tom and Ray Magliozzi, NPR's Car Talk radio program, named their business company "Dewey, Cheetham & Howe". Their corporate office is located in a third-floor office on the corner of Brattle Street and JFK at Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Magliozzi brothers claimed that they established DC & amp; H in 1989.

Popular posters for The Three Stooges feature Stooges as a clumsy member of such a company, although the actual episode uses the names "Dewey, Burnham, and Howe". The 2012 film uses this example, among the like proctologists "Proba, Keister, and Wince" and divorce lawyers "Ditcher, Quick, and Hyde." In the movie Heavenly Daze, Moe and Larry are dealing with a crooked lawyer named "I. Fleecem" (I'm hunting him).

The champion of the Standardbred Wrought Horse, Deweycheatumnhowe, takes its name from these words. On August 3, 2008, an unbeaten horse won the most prestigious race racing, Hambletonian Stakes, ran on Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Variants are on themes. The British Personal Eye Magazine uses "Sue, Grabbitt, and Runne" when it quips the legal profession, reflecting the experience of a magazine defending the defamation lawsuit. In a set of legal forms issued to lawyers and other legal professionals, one fictitious law firm name is "Skrewer, Widow & Children." The aides of the narrative president in Christopher Buckley's novel The White House Mess are from law firm "Dewey, Scruem, and Howe".

Robin Williams used a variant of the punch when making a joke about Bernard Madoff's failure and the fact that his name was pronounced as "made" by saying "What's next, a law firm named Dewey, Fuckyou and Howe?"

Novel Gump and Co. Winston Groom's sequel to Forrest Gump, the name "Dewey, Screwum, & Howe" as a legal representative for members, including Forrest Gump, of the New York Company accused of insider trading.

In an episode of Gilmore Girls, Luke Danes (Scott Patterson), while dealing with his wife, an obnoxious divorce lawyer, jokes that his own lawyer is Don Dewey in "Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe."

In an episode of Prison Break Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell stated that he won a large sum of money after suffering an injury to an oil rig, thanks to his lawyer in "Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe".

In an episode of Friends , boss Chandler Bing states that the company where they both worked has signed a contract with a new law firm: "Dewey, Cheatem and Howe". This is, of course, in the context of an office party, just before the boss sounds funny. "Twenty Sisters dollars, just like in the city."

Video Games 1989 Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals features a law firm under this name, although only a second partner, Suzi Cheatem, makes an actual appearance in the game.

The Dog An Epidemic by Richard Adams features an architect firm called "Sir Conham Goode, Son and Howe".

In an episode of White Collar (Season 01 Episode 09, time index 0:05:41) document that has a Judge ID stamp listing the Plaintiff as represented by "Donald Dewey from Dewey, Chetham and Howe law firm".

In the video game, The Sims 4 , Sims in the Business career works in the "Dewey, Cheatem & Howe" office.
