In trading, double billing is a double filling error for the same unique product. This may happen due to a change in product name or due to a software error.

Legal

By law, double billing refers to charging an hourly rate for two clients for the same time spent working. The American Bar Association prohibits double billing. This is tantamount to overcharging, since the amount of time spent working on one client's work is less than the amount charged to the client.

Partners and partners alike in major law firms face significant pressure to double bills or to "pad" their hours to reduce too much work. These lawyers are usually asked to charge 1800 to 2000 hours per year. It ideally works for 40-hour work weeks, but usually 60 or more, since most lawyers have to spend about two hours in the office for every person they can charge to a particular client. In 1998, Cameron Stracher's book Double Billing suggested that double billing was common in law firms, but the implications were misleading. However, several recent studies show that at least 1/3 lawyers admit that they doubled the client's bill at least once, and that more than half of the lawyers do not believe that double billing is an ethical violation.
