The Night Of is a television drama of the eight-part American crime drama based on the first season of Criminal Justice , the British series of 2008. Miniseries written by Richard Price and Steven Zaillian (based on Criminal Justice's original plot by Peter Moffat), and directed by Zaillian and James Marsh. Broadcast on HBO, The Night Of aired on July 10, 2016 for critical acclaim. The first episode aired on June 24, 2016, via the on-demand HBO service.

Production

On September 19, 2012, it was announced that HBO had ordered a pilot based on the British Criminal Justice television series. James Gandolfini is set to star in, Richard Price will write the project, and Steven Zaillian will direct. On February 19, 2013, HBO presented the project. However, on May 13, 2013, HBO reversed course, taking the Criminal Justice as a limited seven-part series. After Gandolfini's death on June 19, 2013, it was reported that the miniseries would move forward in his honor, and that Robert De Niro would replace Gandolfini. On April 21, 2014, John Turturro replaced De Niro due to scheduling conflicts. On March 11, 2016, it was announced that the project will premiere in mid-2016 under the title The Night Of . Gandolfini maintains posthumous executive producer credit.

The Night Of got critical acclaim. At Metacritic, currently has a score of 90, showing "universal recognition" based on 40 reviews. Currently has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 8.6/10 based on 62 reviews; the consensus reads, " The Night Of is a very well-made, beautifully done mystery that will keep viewers mesmerized and ruin them."

IGN reviewer Jesse Schedeen gave the entire miniseries 8.9 out of 10 'Extraordinary' scores, wrote "With only a few exceptions, this summer has not been the greatest when it comes to the new TV series, which makes The Night Of's run short of all the more specialized This limited series did not shake much of the formula when it came to crime dramas, but was distinguished by outstanding players and the creeping tension that pushed the series from start to finish.
