Official Electronic Data Exchange Standard is a set of file format specifications intended to facilitate the transmission of electronic data in the legal industry. This phrase is abbreviated LEDES and is usually pronounced as "leeds". The LEDES specifications are maintained by the LEDES Supervisory Committee (LOC), established by the Law Firm and the Law Department Services Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Committee members have incorporated law firms, corporate legal departments, universities, and software vendors. The LOC was first created informally in 1995 to address e-billing issues and was subsequently incorporated as a profitable nonprofit corporation in California in 2000.

The LOC currently maintains four sets of data elements and four types of data exchange formats. Four sets of data elements are: activity code; code of expenditure; clocking code classification code; and Uniform Task Based Management System code. The four types of data exchange format are: electronic billing (e-billing); budgeting; timing attribute; and intellectual property management issues.

This type of electronic billing data exchange format provides a standard data format for invoices sent electronically, usually from law firms to corporate clients. LEDES electronic billing format currently has the following variations:

  • LEDES 1998 , the first "LEDES" format, created in 1998, but is no longer in use.
  • LEDES 1998B , plain text files with pipeline boundaries. This standard was adopted in 1998, and so far the more commonly used LEDES format. Has no flexibility, has a rigid structure. Another disadvantage of LEDES 1998B is that invoice level data is repeated on every line item even though it is only necessary once, since it does not vary per line. Many clients try to impose non-standard customization, thus defeating the purpose of having a standard. Nevertheless, law firms prefer him for his simplicity and intimacy.
  • LEDES XML2000 , adopted in 2000, is an XML format. Adoption is slow, but is now quite extensive. One advantage of LEDES 2000 is that although the structure is well defined, the specification defines the segment "extend", allowing the insertion of client-specific fields without violating the format or breaking the standard.
  • LEDES 1998BI (international), plain text files with pipeline restrictions, based on the LEDES 1998B standard. This format is designed to accommodate legal bills generated outside the United States. It covers all the fields in LEDES 1998B format, plus the additional ones. This format was proposed in 2004 by the IT Law Innovative Group (LITIG). LEDES Supervisory Committee (LOC) ratified the format in 2006.
  • LEDES XML2.0 , was ratified in 2006 and responded to international needs in XML format. Contains 15 segments and 153 data elements.
  • LEDES XML2.1 , ratified in 2008. Contains 16 segments and 191 data elements.

More data exchange formats

Other LEDES data exchange formats are as follows:

  • LEDES Budget was ratified in 2006. This XML format facilitates the exchange of budget data between law firms and clients.
  • The LED Time Control Attribute was ratified in 2007 and revised in 2014. This XML format is used to transmit timestamps and ranking data from law firms to clients.
  • The IPMM Discovery Discovery Standard is ratified in 2015. It is a set of XML schemes that can validate XML documents containing discovery disclosure data.
